2012 $10 PURE GOLD COIN – THE WAR OF 1812
The War of 1812 – Heralding a Pivotal Moment in Canada’s History
For Canadians, the War of 1812 marked a pivotal point in the country’s colonial history. It was an event which, while it did not necessarily guarantee the emergence of Canada as a nation, supported the ongoing British North American sovereignty and resistance to American leadership that ultimately led Canada to transition from British colony to dominion to independent nation.
When America declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812, it sought to not only assert their independence but gain control of Canada. Given the size of their army, some American leaders assumed that this would be easy and that Canadians might even welcome independence from Britain. In both assumptions, they had miscalculated Canadians’ loyalties.
English and French Canadian colonists and First Nations peoples alike recognized that American invasion threatened their own independence and way of life, for they had watched the United States expand relentlessly southward and westward in the nineteenth century.
The war was hard fought on both sides for three years, over which time some of Canada’s proudest moments and the heroes at their centre arose. These people and moments have evolved to become enduring focal points for Canadian nationalism, bringing together the common spirit of Canada’s founding peoples in the lore, history, and memory of all Canadians.
The reverse image on this 99.99% pure 1/4-ounce gold coin commemorates the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Artist Cathy Bursey-Sabourin has created a powerful symbolic representation of the War in a heraldic style that eloquently expresses the allegorical relationships between the people and events of the War of 1812. The eagle, representing American forces, stands powerfully opposed to the lion, who symbolizes the British forces. Between them stretches the shield of military conflict upon which is emblazoned the maple leaf, signifying the shared resolve of the English- and French-speaking Canadian volunteers and First Nations warriors who worked together to bravely defend their land and ways of life. Embossed with the commemorative dates \'1812–2012\' and the bilingual hallmark of the Royal Canadian Mint’s renowned purity and craftsmanship, \'9999\' and \'FINE GOLD 1/4 OZ OR PUR.\' The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
