Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne in 1952 to become the monarch of England and the Commonwealth realms of which the Dominions of Canada and Australia were part. Just 25 years of age, she was already a seasoned stateswoman, having long acted on The King's behalf during the many years he struggled with illness. The Queen is one of the world's most recognized and most-travelled monarchs. As the 60th year of her reign begins, she continues to draw enthusiastic admirers wherever she goes. The British monarchy has marked a Diamond Jubilee only once throughout its 1,200-year history—for Queen Victoria in 1897. For Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee, it is a source of pride in England and the Commonwealth—a rare milestone of exceptional service and devotion to be celebrated the world over.
The Diamond Jubilee Official UK Silver Proof £5 Coin: Mintage 75,000
The official UK £5 coin struck especially for Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee features two new portraits of The Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS, inspired by the Diamond Jubilee medal struck by The Royal Mint in 1897 for Queen Victoria. – a faithful portrait as she is today on the obverse, crowned and wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter, while a young Queen, as she appeared on her first coinage of 1953, graces the reverse. The Latin phrase DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS (May God Guide My Steps) appears on the reverse and is a reference to Queen Victoria whose Una and the Lion £5 coin of 1839 also featured these words. The edge inscription, A VOW MADE GOOD, is a reference to The Queen’s promise of 21 April 1947 and its generous and continuing fulfilment.
