20"antique Civil War Era China Doll A/o Cloth Body/leather Arms Hertwig Germany For Sale

Recently, this wonderful antique, 1860s china doll from Germany was sold to an international buyer who was unable to complete the transaction, so here she is again. Just shy of 20 inches, she retains the original, wool or hair-stuffed cloth body with cloth/leather arms. Despite generalized, age-appropriate wear and lightly-stitched reinforcement in areas, it is amazing that the only damage I find, are a few non-detracting chips at the left edge of the shoulder plate. Because of their location, they will be easily concealed beneath clothing. The shoulder head alone, which is incised with the number 7, stands nearly 5 inches tall and has a shoulder to shoulder measurement of about 4.25 inches. Manufactured by Hertwig & Co, it has a flat top hairstyle with a full, white, center part and partially exposed ear lobes. Moreover, its serene, almost haughty, hand-painted face reveals red lid lines, baby-blue eyes and a decidedly Victorian, heart-shaped mouth. The body is exceptionally nice for it is not only sturdy, but can easily assume a seated position for display. Because of the material that it is stuffed with, it should last many generations more, before needing replacement. To give you an idea of her body size, her waist measures only 6.75 inches in circumference while her hips measure an impressive 11.5. The body ends with original cloth lower legs that wear stitched-on black stockings. If not well-visualized in my photos, her feet are long and narrow, measuring about 2.25 inches long. She is costumed in a pair of cotton pantaloons that are likely original. Removing them reveals a derriere so large, that the fabric over the center is naturally gathered.
