3 Ww2 Medical Corp Captain Handwritten Diaries Journals '43-'45, Pacific Theatre For Sale
A set of three WW2diaries written by Captain Charles T. Read, a Medical Corp Soldier. The dates run from October 10, 1043 to December 12, 1945. At first Captain Read worked in variousarmy hospitals in the U.S., from near Palm Springs, California to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He gives a daily account of activities which include medical discussions anddescriptions of surgeries performed. He is constantly trying to get some leave so he can gohomeand see his wife and daughter.
On June 16, 1944 he sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge at 13:15. His first landfall was Hollandia, New Guinea and eventually he arrived in Morotai where he helped set upthe He has many interesting stories of daily life ("jap prisoner had given himself up - came in wearing white flag and lad who saw him first was unarmed - the jap as kindly as you please reached into his pocket and presented the surprised soldier with a grenade"). The working conditions in the hospital were difficult ("My foxhole, where I have visited as many as four times in one night, has my greatest respect").
September 25, 1945: "Finally arrived in S.F. 25th Sept. Glided under the Golden Gate Bridge 7:20 pm with the P.A. system blaring out with the National Anthem."
One diary is smaller, measuring 4 1/2 in. by 6 1/4 in. The other two are 5 in. by 8 in. There are over 200 pages of diary entries and another 30 or 40 of medical notes and addresses etc.Theentries can be difficult to read at times but,as you become accustomed to his handwriting, itgets easier.
