30s Churro Chinle Diamond Navajo Rug Native American Indian Blanket Navaho Bignr For Sale
here is a circa 1930s Navaho weaving that measures 7 feet long by 4 foot 4 inches wide or 84” x 52”. It is attributed to the Chinle, Az weaving
area and is in good to very good condition.
It was handwoven by an expert weaver on a primitive upright loom of all
Native handshorn, handcarded and nicely handspun long staple Churro and Churro
cross sheep wool, both weft & warp. This
is a nice old Chinle concentric serrate diamond layout with 2 rows of 5
diamonds each on a nice carded brownish grey field. The border is a nice triple ribbon
style. (Sometimes our ‘fix-it’ pile just
gets too big & we are also doing spring ranch/farm work, so we are offering
a few pieces “as is” this week.) .
We obtained this vintage Native American textile
from one of three big collections we obtained in Arizona just to offer you here
on . It has a smooth, nice weft
count averaging 24 per inch and a warp count of 7 per inch. The selvage cords are: one side very good with 20” of repair near
one corner, other side good with 8” of damaged cords & loops, one end fair
with damage & missing cords (10”) other end good with 4” of damaged cords. Warp selvages are 2-spiral cords and weft
selvages are 2-spiral cords. The corners
are: 1 very good with a broken warp, 1
very good with repaired side cords and 2 corners are good but with a little
unraveling. The tassels are: 1 short to
the knots & good and 3 are missing.
It is fairly clean now & comes from a non-smoking home. Across 2 feet of one end are a number of
little snags and pulls. In the brown
side border near one corner are 2 old Native type repairs each about 1 ½” x 1
½”. As is, just a pretty old Navajo
floor rug. Both sides are shown in
photos above. Colors are very nice in
this piece of old American Indian art and they are: hand
carded & hand blended natural brownish grey, ivory white & dark
chocolate brown along with hand dyed vegetal wild carrot and aniline turkey
red. Complete with lazy lines, this
example of old Native Americana is ready to head your way.
