38 Grand Tour Intaglio Cameo Medallions In Original Book Box - Early 19th Cent. For Sale
This early 19th century book box contains thirty-eight "GRAND TOUR" Intaglio Medallions. These rare early 19th century medallions were made in Rome by the studio of Pieto Paosetti (see last picture). The box that holds the medallions has two sides and is shaped like a book with marbled covers and a red leather spine. The gilt title on the top of the spine reads "Paoletti Impronte" the bottom of the spine is "Museo De Frenze E Di Parigi". The medallions on the top side of the book are of originals in the Museum of Florence and the medallions on the back side of the book are from the Museum of Paris. On the inside of each cover is a hand written list describing each medallion. On the bottom of the back cover is the name and address of the studio that made the plaster medallions. Intaglio Medallions were Collected on"The Grand Tour" by the nineteenth-century elite from various musums as they traveled across Europe. Althoughplaster intagliomedallions are not extremely rare itis rare to find a set in its original case or "book". This book originally contained forty medallions (there aretwo missing). Each medallion is in a black cardboard frame and has a red number that corresponds with the information on the inside covers. The book coversare detached but present. All the plaster medallions are in extremely good condition! !
