They were distributed in 1952 as part of Curio Hostess Glassware Sets by Libbey Glass featuring 8 patterns: 1) Firearms, 2) Stamps, 3) Weather vanes, 4) Locomotives, 5) Ships, 6) Musical instruments, 7) Carriages and 8) Glass. According to an old advertisement, these were “modern glasses decorated with authentic collector’s curios” and “decorated with jet black, 22k gold and white”. They had “rims guaranteed against chipping” and “the colors were permanent”. They came gift boxed. Freda Diamond who was considered America’s foremost authority on household furnishings designed the Curio collection. She had a 37-year career with Libbey that started in 1942, and she is legendary for starting the now global practice of researching consumer preferences before manufacturing product.
These 5 1/2" tall glasses bear the carriage design, and they are in excellent condition – no cracks, chips, fading or any other signs of age, use or abuse. Dimensions & Capacity: Tumbler - 5 1/2"T X 2 3/4"D; 10 ounces
