Lot of 4 Original (Not Re-production) “MutoscopeCards / Pin-up Cards” with artwork illustration by “Gil Elvgren” and all seemin Near Mint condition (ConditionDetails Above). Better still; the cards will come to you in an individuallypocketed plastic sheet to help keep them preserved.
Thewhat, where and when of these Original Print Cards:Best research indicates that Gil produced some of these during his longtime tenurewith Louis F. Dow & Co, while others were produced for Brown & Bigelow,but they all appear to be as circa 1940’s. Some of these are considered as veryrare to collectors! The titles on these cards are; (1) “A Hitch In Time” – (2)“Weight Control” – (3) “A Good Skate” – (4) a multi Image card that depicts afew of Elvgrens most popular works…. Multi image cards like this was typicallyused for advertising to mutliscope arcade vendors, and occasionally offered topublic in vending machines.
CardSize FAQ? All these are (5 ¼” x 3 ¼”) lithographs on heavycard stock as is standard. Now, I’ve received questions from folks who are a novicelike me and thought that some of the illustrations seem to have parts cut offby the cards corners based on what the same images looked like when they wereused in full version for calendars, etc, and that’s correct, however, thiswasn’t by the seller/collectors, but by the original release printers for this validreason. As each card reads, these are “A mutoscope card”, and in order to fit thestandard slots of most mutoscope viewers or vending machines a few of the fullversion images had to be trimmed before distribution to the arcades, etc. Thissmaller size also made them very popular with G.I.s as pin-ups and nose art, buteven those that were originally trimmed to format are still just as highlyvaluable as the full version renderings of the same illustration!
