This sale is for4 VERY RARE \"W. FAIRBAIRNS & SONS\" antique PorcelainArmorial Large Soup Bowls witha puce Colored crowned gartershaped back stamp.
This China is remarkable - even thoughit is 150 years old, it is as goodor better than anychinayou will see today- the quality of production and finish is outstanding - I believe it is actually better than any of the similarly aged Derby, Minton or actually any of the other English porcelain makers of that time or of today.
TheBowlsmeasure approximately103/8inchesacross by1 1/2inchestall/deep andare marked with the pattern number H 2467.
TheBowls haveabeautifully decorativerimwith apastel bluish/greenband accented with gilding and a shield shape armorial with Intial\'s which I believe are an \"I\" and an \"O\" with the \"I\" in silver and the \"O\" on top in gold - this is the first time I have seen two different colors of gilding used on porcelain tableware.
The wider gold bandis actuallyover an impressed (into the porcelain) pattern ofconjoined circles with flowers with 5 dots aspetals and a stem with 2 leaves.
TheBowls arein Excellent Condition (almost like new condition), with no chips, cracks, crazing, utensil marksor repairs and the gildingisin almost like new condition.
A remarkable find for such a RARE Antique Porcelain and the Condition is outstanding.
NB: I have included the information I found onWilliam Fairbairns on the Internet as Godden’s Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks (1989 reprint) had no information on him.
The William Fairbairns mark was aprinted garter type mark with crown above and occurs with the name ‘WM. Fairbairns’ and appears to only have been used for the years 1863 to 1865.
\"Fairbairns, Williamwas associated with three partnerships thatwere all located in Hanley, Staffordshire dating from c1863-1891.
His first partnership was with Thomas Cooper, Shelton (Hanley)1863-1865. Fairbairns was one of the executors and trustees who continues on with the firm when Cooper died, this partnership was dissolved on December 16th, 1865.
His second partnership was with Ambrose Bevington & Co. Hanley, 1871-1891. During the 1880-91 period, the trade name was Ambrose Bevington and Co..Fairbairns was Bevington\'s Partner at the time of their Dissolution of Partnership on December 31, 1891. At this time they were also involved with the Hanley Porcelain Company.
His third partnership was with Hanely Porcelain Co., Hanley, 1891-1893. This company of Burton Place, Hanley, succeeded Thomas Bevington. However, Ambrose Bevington and William Henry Fairbairns were also involved until the Dissolution of Partnership on December 31, 1891.
