This is an EXCELLENT, CLEAN Antique CDV Photo Album from the 1860s with only about 3 TINY torn inserts. I only noticed these tears as I was inserting the CDVs for this sale.

This Antique Leather CDV Photo Album is in EXCELLENT condition ~ its ONLY flaws are some bumps and scoffing ~ all of which are totally commensurate for its age.

Made in Philadelphia in 1865, it was considered a “state of the art” construction called “The Harding Patent Flexible Chain Back Album”. This Album knew no equal for its ‘great strength, durability and neatness’.

The superiority of The Harding Patent Flexible Chain Back Album was apparent to all and was called the “Album of the Ages”.

The materials used in this Album’s construction were of the highest quality: The leaves are beautifully printed on the finest cards; the bindings are of the best Philadelphia styles, new and beautiful designs, bound in rich Turkey morocco leather, fine extra gilt clasps, chased edges and pearl ornaments, to protect the covers.

The album measures about 6 inches by 4 1/2 inches by 2 inches thick.

Its exquisite Brass clasp has leaf decoration ~ embellished with a “pearl” and is in excellent condition. When the Album is empty, it closes securely.

All of that said: I purchased this empty Antique Album with the sole intention of filling it with CDVs. Empty ~ there was no problem in securing that beautiful clasp.

However, once I had carefully inserted all 40 of these photographs, I realized that the filled pages had caused the book to “swell” …….

Unfortunately, this same thing happened the another time I had filled a beautiful, empty CDV Album ~ My mistake at that time, though, was in trying to secure the clasp of the filled album which immediately cracked the spine.

I have no idea why that happened! Both albums obviously had once contained CDVs ~ perhaps the spine is now too dry to expand? Don’t know …..

I do not want that to happen again so I am selling this CDV ALBUM without clasping it …… the new owner can decide what to do ~ either remove some photos or just display the book OPEN, as pictured.
