4833. March 28, 1865 Civil War Letter Co E 31st Maine Vols from LL Cleveland "near Parke Station" to Mr Washington W. Perry from Kents Hill, Maine. (Probably a student at Kents Hill School).
"Dear Wash, I have packed up and already to move but as the order "Fall In" has not yet come, I will occupy the moments in replying to your letter though you must not expect a very long one. Of course you have heard all the particulars of the fight. but I will tell you about the Johnnies I saw. They were a rather hard set of fellows. They had no uniforms but all kinds of clothes. Most of them seemed glad that they were prisoners and were very sociable. Speaking to one Johnnie as he was passing by he said "we will go back and help take Petersburg if you will give us half, another going along with a pair of boots over his shoulder said these cost ($200) Two Hundred dollars in country I came from. There was a "right smart" pile of them as a Virginian would say. There was quite a large number of officers amongst them. Please excuse blots as this is a very poor pen. Give my respects to Granger Fuller and tell him I should be very happy to receive a letter from him. I am ashamed to send this and hope I had time. I would send a better one but as you are an old friend I shall let her rip. Please don't show this to anyone. From your true friend, LL Cleveland."
