6 Civil War Letters Elwood Daily 12th Maine Infantry Reg Co. G Confederate Money For Sale
You are offerding on a lot of 6 late 1862-66 civil war letters from from Elwood S Daily to his brother Frank Daily from Lowell Massachusetts mostly all sent from Winthrop Maine. These are family letters from the battle field to his family or brother and sister. I do have more of his letters I am selling in another lot from his time ia little after the civil war if interested. One of the letters I had found Augusta Georgia Confederate Bank Notes stuffed in the envelope from when he was stationed down in Savannah to go fight. The stamps could alone be worth some money, they are 3 cent washington stamps of different colors some my have grills and some without, just not a collector of them enough to really know. The envelopes are all full with letters and money and looking to be read and find out the story of this man. Below is a Quick Recap of what is on the letters, which there is a lot more to read on them also below are more photo and scans of the letters and envelops -SEE BELOW-Letter # 1 Boston Massechusets March 5th 1862, He is writing to his brothers to tell him hes doing well, and hasn't heard from him since he enlisted. The goes on the say they will be a week or two before they head to Savannah Georgia. He talks about how his partner is sick and in the hospital and how island is a touch place, telling how the boys there are cut throats and thieves but he looks out for himself. He says he is at Boston Harbor Massachusetts Captain Tomson Company and telling him to please write and send postage.Letter #2-November 27th 1864 Talking about how he is doing and having a good time where he is. Saying he helps kill 2 hogs and 23 turkeys also went into Gardner and got a horse and wagon. And how he could find out news about the war. It goes onto tell father to write and that uncle lowrenso is almost dead and failing fast and they don't expect him to live much longer. signed E.S DailyLetter #3-Febuary 5th 1865- ( Private_ Keep this out of site) Hes talking about how he cant go home and that James will be heading home in 2 or 3 weeks and says he is going to stay and enlist this summer. I am thinking about going to war if i do i shall go in the 30th Main regiment that is out of Fort Fisher. He goes on to say it may be awhile till he hears from him because he will be out south. also says he never laughed so hard about the story of his father getting drunk from Greene Maine.Part 2 - He says he was waiting for a warm day to write to his brother. He says he heard from Henry Daily 2 or 3 weeks ago and he says he has been in six or seven fits or batlles and they he came out alright every time. He was wounded 3 times and 30 or 40 killed out of his Calvary and a sum of 4 or 5 killed out fo his company. He says he fired his pistol a good many times and was in Florida then. The town of Greene wants 23 more men and Lewiston wants 70 more men and Portland wants 600 or more men to fill up. I have heard that General Butler has got home and made a sketch about this war coming to and peace, that is all humbling. He says he cant stop to write too much because the winters get so damn cold and had some rough snows this winter from Elwood S Daily.Letter # 4-March 15th 1865 Talks about how he received his kind letter and that he is on his way to Savannah Georgia, Says he cant stop to write much and to give respect to the Adams and the rest from Elwood s Daily Maine Regiment Company G Boston Harbor Massachusetts.Letter # 5- September 29 1865 From Thomasville Georgia goes on to talk about how they haven't written in a long time and it was about due. Talks about having to do something since he has enlisted? they have lost 4 men out here and is helping dig one of the graves. He says one was sick 5 weeks ago, the second sick 5 weeks ago, and third one week the 4th was only sick 15 hours and died and goes on to say they didnt know what was the matter with him. Says he has been lucky and haven't gotten the chills yet. He says they are the only Company in the town and that there Chaplin is very sick and in the hospital and that he doesn't think he made it but his wife is with him. Talks about how his partner gets all the potatoes he wants and that he wishes he were out here with him. Talks about how he gets all the sugar caine he wants and how he never had so much greens in all his life Tells his brother to tell his father to make him a pair of calf skin boots. Goes on to say only five months longer and he will make a present to his brother out of his rifle and guns. This letter was found with confederate bank notes from Georgia on the inside please see photosLetter # 6- Febuary 26th 1866 (Mustered out in 1866) Says he hasn't had time to write and that Company G and Company F will be taking the boat this week Saturday back home. Says how he liked it down in Georgia and how he hoped to come back. He says he must repost to Augustus Maine so he can be discharged, talks about how hes going to get paid but doesn't have much because he spends a lot. Talks about how man names James Sanborn enlisted and stayed a few days and enlisted in the 12th regiment. Talks about how father made trouble with this James guy and doesn't like him very much. Then tells them to say hi to everyone and he will be home soon.Also included is a 20 dollar confederate note, 6 letters from the soldier and 2 1 and 2 dollar bank confederate notes from Augusta Georgia.12th Regiment, Maine Infantry
