The cover is accompanied by a patriotic letter sheetwith a blue globe and Flag on the ocean, it has been taped to hold it together. The letter is about war news and is faint and hard to read,I have transcribed it the best I can.

The letter is from John Majar, 1st Corporal,Nagle Light Infantry

Date May 1, 1861, Camp Curtain, PA

Dear friend,

I now take my pencil to give you the preceeding of the camp.We got to the junction at noon where we got our grubs and drinks after which wewent to Sundsbury, where the ladies treated us to pie and boiled eggs fromthere. We came to Halifax where we was treated again and the ladies sang “TheStar Spangled Banner”. We gave them hearty cheers and left them vowing that wewould come back and marry all of them.

There was nothing that occurred of any note till we got tocamp, where they turned us into horse stalls, but that is not a firearms stand. They would not let us out and every man had to cook his own, but next day wewere allowed to go round the camp, but not outside. That night I staid in, butthe next, me and Devonporte broke a board of the fence and went out and wentand run the town. We kept that game up till one night we came back and found aguard station around the camp. We went that night and laid in a barn. In themorning we were sent till we came across a greenhorne. We sped up and asked himto see his gun. He gave it to him so when he threw it out of his way and wegave by one day before yesterday.

A guard was detailded to go down town after deserters whenthey got drunk and stabbed one man and broke the skull of another. I don’t knowwhat company they belong to. And account of that we can’t go to town. TheScranton boys are here. They are formed in the same regiment with us. Cosier iswith them and holds the office of orderly sergeant. We leave here tomorrow.Give my love to all the boys and don’t forget the galls.

From your friend John Majar,

1st Corporal, Nagle Light Infantry
