This stunning knife handle/scales material is one layer ofpremium grade natural abalone sheet (natural, not imitation)sandwiched by two layers of acrylic of 5mm and 1mm in thickness, respectively. There is no black epoxy backing. Both sides of the acrylic are clear.

Other products like this exist in the market, but they are using dyed/colored acrylic to hide the problems in the abalone sheet. What makes these special is the extra clear and bright acrylic is totally transparent, not dyed, allowing more light entering. The same piece displaysmultiple natural colors at the same time: green, blue, purple, yellow, and more.

The price is merely a fraction of pure abalone sheets of the same thickness. Acrylic is a lot easier to work with and much less prone to breakage, easier to polish. Also a great material for inlay and other projects.
They are made of natural abalone shells obtained from seafood farms in Mexico. Then the shells are sliced into very thin layers. These thin layers are then carefully arranged into a flat sheet. Most abalone sheet produced from this technology have banding and dis-colorization issues.
