OLD STOMPING GROUNDS
Sometimes called California'sFATHER LODE,extensive placer gold deposits inTrinity Countywere exploited byan army of argonautsin the mid to late1800s.Many eons before these diggers arrived, erosional forceshad laid downgold-bearing sediments ona monumental scale.These ancientlakes and riverbeds were subsequentlycut into byrunning water which left portions of the mostlywashed downby the'Giants' now, these remnantformations weresubsequently discovered by the 49ers and their saltyfollowers. A succession of argonauts moved in, chewed up the gold-bearing formations, andspat them back out again.Mountains of boulders attest to the miner's efforts.
Towns sprang up too. The vestiges of a civil, polite societygrew out of these gnarly roots of humanity.Rich gravel depositswere blasted down throughout a quadrantencompassing roughly 50 to 75 square miles. On an equallymonumental scale,bucketline dredgestore through creek and riverbottom grabbing the precious metal found near bedrock. Squeezedin therewere theuncountableminions ofsmall-scale,independent miners. They came in every cut and color with picks, shovels,rockers, goldpans, and 'longtoms'. They survived by the law of the west.A few of them struck it rich. A lot of them made a livin', though probably not much of one.What a colorful era it must havebeen.Now we've gotnew generations ofadventure-seekers. You might as well try your hand. Who knows, you might find a nugget.
LAW OF THE YUKON
"From my ruthless throne, I have ruled alone for a million years and a day;
Hugging my mighty treasure, waiting for man to come;
Till he swept like a turoffer torrent, and after him swept - the scum.
