8-arm Durga Astride Lion Vahana – Nepal Indian Bronze – Good Size - Spectacular :
Eight-armed Durga in her fiercest form. In this form Durga is seen holding her usual attributes and seated on top of her mount, the lion. Nicely patinated.
Most common depictions of Durga are in a seated position, standing ones are more rare, but very rare are the ones showing Durga astride her lion vahana, the so-called Simhavahini. I’ve only seen one of these on (this one) in the last ten years.
In this bronze Durga is riding her vahana, the lion.She holds various weapons and attributes in her eight arms.
Height = 15.8 cm; width = 11.6 cm; depth = 8 cm.
This is similar to an object shown in Edward Moor’s The Hindu Pantheon, published in 186. See illustration. [Note: Book cover and figure are shown for information only; the book is not part of this sale.]
I’ve been collecting bronze [or brass] Hindu gods and deities and related statues, figures and objects from India for several years, though I’ll claim no expertise on the topic. I’ll be selling a number of items during the coming months. The quality and rarity varies – as does my knowledge of the pieces. I’ll sometimes quote from previous listing descriptions.
I ship on Monday and Friday. I am happy to combine shipping to save costs.
