800 Silver And Cut Glass Wine Decanter - H. Schaper - Germany - 19th Century:
800 German Silver and Cut Glass Wine Decanter, Stamped with H. Schaper. Hugo Schaper (1844-1915) was a Berlin Court Jeweler. In 1875 he opened his own shop in Berlin. After his death in 1915, the shop continued well in the 1940s under the direction of his son Carl Hugo Schaper. This graceful decanter is 13 inches tall. The base has a diameter of 3-3/4 inches. The weight is 2 pounds, 2 ounces. The front has an ornate monogram that appears to be the letter S. There are no chips or cracks. The finial has taken a slight bump on one occasion (before it got to me) and it has a slight list (see photo 12). The serial number is A10874. The little candlelabra mark stamped to the left of the 800 denotes the Koch and Bergfeld Company, Bremen Kirchweg 200, founded in 1829. They are still in business to this day. Insurance and shipping are included.
