My dear Cousin,

I have been rather dilatory I must admit, in answering your very kind letter. I have been in hopes of being able to give you some information regarding my dear brother. We received a letter recently from him dated March 17th. He was then in Sparta, which is the County Seat of the Parish of Beinville. He was in excellent health but we have not heard from him since that terrible battle. The Crescent Regiment to which my brother belonged suffered severely but we hope and indeed we have every reason to believe that he was not in the engagement since his Company (E) has not yet been exchanged but I was told that the exchange will take place in a week or two. Yesterday between 70 and 80 men were arrested who it is said were engaged in getting up an expedition for Mexico. The troops have been in quite a commotion all this week about this expedition. We may hear more about this undertaking......

Pa has quite recovered from the rheumatism but is quite feeble. Anxiety for my brother and the distressed state of affairs weigh heavily upon his mind. We hope that we may soon have peace. Pa received quite a lengthy letter from Uncle George this week.

You must truly miss the company of your daughter but you are right in giving her every advantage on acquiring a good education. I hope she will merit your approbation and thus repay you for your present loss of her company.

Ma has been suffering with a severe cold which caused a swelling of her whole person but no pain. Strange is it not? This is the second time that Ma has been swollen in this manner. The swelling has done down and she is much better. Pa will write soon. Remember us kindly to your family and all your friends.

Your affectionate Cousin,

Lizzie
