935 Silver Pendant & Necklace By Martin Mayer Of Mainz, Jugendstil, peter Behrens:
A935 silver handmade pendant and chain by Martin Mayer of Mainz. The piece is encrusted with many marcasites, garnets, tourmalines, and a clear lime green stone at the center. It is perhaps the finest piece I have ever had from Martin Mayer's workshop.
Martin Mayer began operations in 1888 in the city of Mainz. The firm was widely known for its exceptional execution. Some of Germany's leading designers used Martin Maryer to execute their designs, among them Peter Behrens, Hans Christiansen and Patiz Huber. In later years, the firm also opened a branch in the city of Pforzheim, the capital of Germany's jewelry manufacturing.
The pendant measuresjust underOne & One-Half [ 1.50 ] inches in diameter. Or, 3.90 Cms. The chain measures aboutThirty-One [ 31.00 ] inches in length.Or, 79.00 Cms. It is the largest pendant I've seen by Martin Mayer. The pendant is well marked as can be seen in the 5th and 6th photographs. I think the chain is probably original to the piece. It is marked on the second link nearest the latch. I am unable to determine the assay because the mark is tiny.
The condition is exceptional. The pendant is encrusted with many tiny stones, but only one of the marcasites is missing. I have highlighted the empty setting in the second photograph. The bail is also set with marcasites.
