is a fascinating, beautifully sculpted and shiny native gold nugget
from the North Fork of the American River in El Dorado County, California
- just a few miles upstream from the historic Sutter Mill 1849 gold
rush site in California. This specimen has terrific character - the
word for a nugget with intricate, sculptural features and formations.
The color is bright butter yellow.

Information about crystals/mineral specimens from this location
Nuggets are naturally occurring pieces of native gold that were broken off of the original gold vein, and then carried by water and erosion to a new location. Nuggets are always very popular with collectors. But nuggets are rare: Less than 1% of the world's gold is still in nugget form, which is why nuggets sell for a much higher price than gold bullion. The value of nuggets is determined by several factors: weight/size, color, brilliancy, rarity, origin, and so on. Purity is not a factor, because it's not possible to assay every nugget, and because doing so would damage the specimen. Most nuggets are between 20k and 22k - which is 83-92% pure.
The rarest and most valuable form of gold is gold crystals. The American Museum of Natural History website says that gold crystals can be worth 7 times as much as gold bullion, and the price for nuggets does not fluctuate the wa the price of gold bullion does! Crystal habits include octahedra, cubes, dodecahedra, wires, herring bone, and dendritic and arborescent crystal clusters. Most crystallized gold sold today is dissolved out of quartz using hydrofluoric acid. Nuggets may still contain crystals which were not beaten too badly by erosion.
you're a fan of the Gold Rush show on TV, check out how much
bigger this nugget is than even the largest ones the miners find on
that show.) This is another terrific specimen which we picked up out
at the 4-day Tucson Gem and Mineral Society Show.
Facts about gems, rocks and minerals
We are occasionally asked why the prices for our nuggets is higher than the spot price of gold. There are several reasons. First is that the market price is for bullion in dust or bars, so gold nuggets always trade for a much higher price. Next, knowing the specific locality where a nugget is found increases the value compared to a nugget with no provenance. Finally, some gold localities are more desirable than others, depending on whether the locality is still producing or not and/or the age of the nugget (if known).
Gold is a pleasure to own and possess, as many people have discovered throughout the ages and around the world. Gold is a very stubborn element when it comes to reacting to or combining with other elements. Keeping this in mind, helps to explain many things about gold. There are very few true gold ores, besides native gold, because it forms a major part of only a few rare minerals, it is found as little more than a trace in a few others or it is alloyed to a small extent with other metals such as silver. Gold is almost indestructible and has been used and then reused for centuries to the extent that all gold of known existence is almost equal to all the gold that has ever been mined. Gold is a great medium metal for jewelry, as it never tarnishes. Native gold wires emerging from massive white quartz can make for a visually stunning specimen.
A few of the minerals that bear gold in their respective formulas are in a subclass of sulfides called the tellurides. The element gold seems to have an affinity for tellurium and this is one of the only elements that gold can bond with easily. In fact only a few rare tellurides are found with out gold. A few of the tellurides are nagyagite, calaverite, sylvanite and krennerite. These are all minor ores of gold but their contributions to the supply of gold pales next to native gold's own contribution. Occassionally these minerals are associated with native gold.
There are a number of minerals that are aptly named "Fool's Gold" because only a fool could believe they are gold! Actually it is easy for people who see shiny golden colored flakes sparkling at them from some rock they just picked up to believe that they have struck pay-dirt. Gold's ductility, sectility, density and softness are usually sufficient to distinguish it from the much cheaper imposters. The most famous "fool's gold" is the very common sulfide, pyrite. Chalcopyrite, marcasite and just about any golden colored sulfide has been also proven to be worthy the "fool's gold" monicure. Weathered flakes of biotite which can sport a bright yellow color and a nice flash of light when viewed just right, have also been mistaken for gold.
specimens are sometimes artisticly stunning and a good investment as
well. After all, it is gold, which never seems to lose its value. Good
natural specimens though are more expensive than their actual weight
value. This is to be expected as good gold crystals are somewhat scarce
(most are melted down for quick profits) and you really don't want a
natural specimen to be worth what a lump of previously smelted and refined
gold is worth, do you?
Information about crystal, gem and mineral metaphysics and healing
People interested in metaphysics and crystal healing tell us that gold symbolizes the purity of the spiritual aspect of "all that is", allowing one to attain and maintain communion with the source of all being. It emits an energy to prompt one to allow beauty to come forth from the inner being. It helps one to improve one's character via learning, lessening the traumas experienced during the gaining of knowledge. It assists one to activate, to mobilize and to actualize the intrinsic potential of the self. The energy of gold can help one to eliminate ego conflicts and feelings of futility. Gold has been called "the master healer," and is an excellent mineral for purification of the physical body.
