A Beautiful Antique, Edwardian 9ct Gold Brooch Set With Peridot And Amethysts:
On offer is a very beautiful, but puzzling antique brooch. It does not carry a full set of hallmarks so it cannot be exactly dated, but from the style I would say that it is almost certainly Edwardian.
The open-work Rose Gold frame is clearly stamped 9ct, and is in very nice overall condition; the fixing pin is a little loose but is secure and fastens well onto the c-clasp.
What is puzzling is that the very beautifully faceted, centrally set peridot is flanked by two very contrasting amethysts. The amethyst towards the c-clasp is a nice full-coloured stone, whereas the stone nearest the pin hinge is the palest of lilacs looking almost white at some angles (the contrast does not show at all in the photos, but is strikingly clear when viewed with the naked eye). This is a puzzle as two such contrasting stones would never have been picked by accident by the jeweler/goldsmith. Even if one stone had been lost then it would have been easier to find a matching amethyst than one that is so pale. I am of the opinion that this was intended as a very subtle nod towards the Suffragette movement, trying (with still using two amethysts) to copy their colours of Purple (for loyalty and dignity), Green (for hope) and White (for purity), and this may actually be a piece of Suffragette jewellery.
The brooch measures approximately 50mm and weighs approximately 3.2g.
