An Italian-American major in World War II wins the love and admiration of the local townspeople when he searches for a replacement for the 700 year-old town bell that had been melted down for bullets by the fascists.

John Richard Hersey was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American writer and journalist considered one of the earliest practitioners of the so-called New Journalism, in which storytelling devices of the novel are fused with non-fiction reportage. Hersey\'s account of the aftermath of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, was adjudged the finest piece of journalism of the 20th century by a 36-member panel under the aegis of New York University\'s journalism department.

The Franklin Library \"Signed 60\" collection is widely considered to be one of the most spectacular and valuable of the Franklin Library or Easton Press collections. All titles in the 60 Signed Limited Editions series were privately printed between 1977 and 1982 and signed by the author. They are bound in genuine leather, with gilt page edges, 22k gold accents, and sewn-in bookmarks. As Franklin Library closed in 2000, all titles in the 60 Signed Limited Editions series are out of print with many considered very rare. This luxurious collection includes Tennessee Williams - Selected Plays, Kurt Vonnegut - Slaughterhouse Five, Jean-Paul Sartre - Five Plays, Truman Capote - Other Voices, Other Rooms, Joseph Heller - Catch 22, Robert Penn Warren - All the King\'s Men, and many more.

In addition to their gorgeous leather bindings, Franklin Library Press books are known for their interior illustrations. The Franklin Library commissioned fine art illustrations from known artists for many of their titles. These illustrations were commissioned to be used only for that particular Franklin Library book, and cannot be found anywhere else.
