Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
Lewis CarrollIllustrated by
A.E. JacksonEarly UK Jackson edition,

(in any printing)Published by
Humphrey Milford, London

Hardback in pictorial dust jacket, pale-blue cloth with gilt and brown designs to upper board and spine, top edges blue, other edges untrimmed, beige pictorial endpapers printed in brown, 16 mounted colour plates (printed on coated paper), grey card mounts with captions, over 50 line drawings (smallest devices repeating), illustrated title page printed in red and black, text pages printed on laid paper, 200 pages. Approximate size 9.4 x 6.6 inches (24 x 16.8 cm). Printed by R. Clay and Sons Ltd, London and Bungay, Suffolk.Early UK Jackson edition, 1919 (first UK edition published 1915).
Similar to Lovett 239.This is one of the most opulent and beautiful early editions of Alice in Wonderland, a sumptuous production typical of the Edwardian era – the so-called Golden Age of book illustration.

A.E. Jackson’s 16 colour plates, presented in the style of the great gift books of Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham (each plate hand-mounted on coloured card), are truly outstanding, painted in a delicate, harmonious colour palette and with a wonderful eye for detail. There is a touch of Rackham to the illustrations, but Jackson’s work undoubtedly retains its own vision.

The first UK Jackson edition of 1915 (published by Henry Frowde/Hodder & Stoughton) is very scarce; I can locate only one collectable copy currently for sale worldwide. This early reissue – identical in format to the first edition, and equally uncommon – comes complete with the original dust jacket, rarely seen.

Note that the first British Jackson edition, with its beautiful, gilt-decorated cover design by the artist, is much more desirable than the American edition, which has a completely different (non-Jackson) cover, nowhere near as nice.

A fabulous book, here in lovely complete and intact, with no owner inscriptions. Contents very clean, with only a few small, pale smudges. A few minor flaws commensurate with age, or from production process: usual minor separation between some gatherings (also at title-page hinge), usual age-toning to paper, two consecutive leaves with corner crease (lightly impressed on to adjacent leaves; original production flaw), text pages with usual slight offsetting/foxing from plates, several pairs of leaves clumsily opened, with uneven/ragged edges, one mount (plus adjoining page) previously loose (now re-glued; fore-edge of mount with a little bumping/creasing plus two or three nicks), first few leaves with light diagonal crease, half-title page with browning (probably from piece of paper previously laid in), last plate with light diagonal crease (original production flaw; see scans), uncut (protruding) edges with usual bumping, creasing, nicks and wear. Free endpapers with offsetting/tanning; rear endpaper hinge with two nicks. Top of page block with slight scratching, lower corner with usual shelf-soiling. Binding slightly loose. Boards and spine as shown; very clean and fresh, well protected by jacket. Unclipped dust jacket as per images, including old paper repairs to reverse; supplied in previous owner’s protective sleeve.
