A Good Victorain Microscope By J Swift & Son, London

Description: Offered is a very fine late 19th/early 20th century microscope signed ‘J Swift & Son, London’ in superb original condition. The microscope is contained within its original baise lined French polised mahogany case.

The microscope stands on a heavy brass base finished in black lacquer/enamel. The 2 back legs fold up to reduce the size of the case.

The body of the microscope is supported at the top of the base via 2 large blued steel screws. At the base of the microscope is a nickel plated brass tube that carries the plano-concave mirror held in a gimbal. The stage is a square of brass with a square grid for positioning slides. Below the stage is an Abbe style condenser with variable iris diaphragm. At the back of the stage is the main microscope body at the top of which is the fine focussing mechanism which is a screw acting on a spring. Above this is the course focussing. At the bottom of the body tube is a 2 objective changer. The body tube has a graduated drawer tube. The microscope comes with the following accessories;

A 1/4inch nickle Swift objective
A 1/6inch Swift objective
An AA Carl Zeiss objective and can.
An eyepiece marked 2.
An eyepiece marked 3.
A double nose piece.
Stage clips.
A sub-stage condenser.
6 Flatters & Garnett slides.

In all this microscope is an excellent, usable example of its type, and made the more unique by the superb condition and unusual fold up legs.

Condition: Cosmetically the microscope is very good with the lacquer coverage complete with little signs of wear. The blacking of the base is also very good and bright noting just a few small areas of wear. Mechanically the microcope is good and tight with no noticeable wear . Optically the microscope offers good clear images.
