A fabulous signed late Meiji period boxwood Okimono Netsuke of the Three wise monkeys.
The three monkeys Mizaru, Kikazaru, and Iwazaru demonstrate the Buddhist injunction that if we do not see, hear, or speak evil, we will be spared of evil. This excellently carved Netsuke okimono shows the three monkeys shoulder to shoulder. A wonderfully tactile composition that was most likely used as a netsuke. Each monkey features a warm brown patina; realistic, if slightly cute facial expressions, and beautifully proportioned posturing.
The himotashi holes are made naturally from the positioning of the arms of the two outer monkeys covering the ears of the central monkey.
Please see photos foe more visual information . It measures 7cm in length x 4cm high. PLEASE NOTE THAT POSTAGE TO NONE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES MAY BE MORE THAN STATED. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR A QUOTE. THANK YOU.
