Wright binder' on front turn-in, lightly rubbed and scuffed (generally nothing some leather conditioner couldn't improve), some bumping to corners, direct gilt lettering to morocco compartment, raised bands and heavy gilt tooling with flowers, fleurons, double fillet border with inner acorn and flower rolls. Intermittent foxing as always due to paper quality, but overall an impressive and very handsome volume. Provenance: art historian Harry Bober with his name on upper left paste-down"A revered artist in both his home country of Britain and continental Europe during the early 17th and late 18th centuries, John Flaxman was a prolific artist who created works of sculpture, illustrations and designs for the world-famous potter Josiah Wedgwood.Known today for his legacy as the Royal Academy's first Professor of Sculptor, Flaxman found fame through his illustrations of Homer and Dante's legendary tales.John Flaxman entered the Royal Academy School in 1770 where he met William Blake and the formed a life-long friendship. Blake was integral in encouraging Flaxman's appreciation of medieval and Renaissance art.In 1775, Flaxman started to work for the pottery manufacturer Josiah Wedgwood. Here his designs were produced in wax and Flaxman learned a great deal of discipline from creating work that had to be translated into the silhouette form of Wedgwood's famous Jasperware.
