A Magnificent Guangxu Marked Flambe Fanghu Vase:
A late listing for this week as I have an urgent bill to pay.
This listing is for the following item:
Description:A superb antique Chinese porcelain flambé fanghu vase, decorated in a fluescent red glaze, that transmutes to black over a white shoulder as it ran down from the top.
Note the peach design underglaze. This vase bears the incised six character reign mark of the Guangxu (1875 to 1908) emperor and is considered to be of the period.
Age:In my opinion Guangxu mark and period, but buyers must buy on their own judgment.
Size:300mm (12 No chips, no cracks and no restoration. Some expected minor wear and signs of use. Some scratches visible in the photographs. Glaze dribbles from the lugs and over the foot rim. See photos.
Comment: In 30 plus years of collecting and dealing, this is the third such example to pass through my hands. All three bear the black lacquer foot that this example shares, possibly from sitting on a lacquer bench after firing.
Compare this rare vase with two from the Allen collection, Lots 412 & 413), sold at Sothebys London on 9 November 2005 for 10,200 and 13,200 pounds sterling (up to USD$20,000). See last photo.
