Some interesting facts from Wikipedia about the Motorcycle ...

Amotorcycleoften called abike, motorbike, orcycleis a two-or three-wheeledmotor vehicle. Motorcycle design varies greatly to suit a range of different purposes:long riding a motorcycle and related social activity such as joining amotorcycle cluband attendingmotorcycle rallies.

In 1894, Hildebrand & Wolfmüller became the first series production motorcycle, and the first to be called a motorcycle. In 2014, the three top motorcycle producers globally by volume wereHonda,Yamaha(both from Japan), andHero MotoCorp(India).

In developing countries, motorcycles are overwhelmingly utilitarian due to lower prices and greaterfuel economy. Of all the motorcycles in the world, 58% are in the Asia-Pacific and Southern and Eastern Asia regions, excluding car-centric Japan.

According to theUnited States Department of Transportationthe number of fatalities per vehicle mile traveled was 37 times higher for motorcycles than for cars.

The firstinternal combustion, petroleumfueled motorcycle was theDaimlerReitwagen. It was designed and built by the German inventorsGottlieb DaimlerandWilhelm MaybachinBad Cannstatt, Germany in 1885.This vehicle was unlike either thesafety bicyclesor theboneshakerbicycles of the era in that it had zero degrees ofsteering axis angleand nofork offset, and thus did not use the principles ofbicycle and motorcycle dynamicsdeveloped nearly 70 years earlier. Instead, it relied on two outrigger wheels to remain upright while turning.

The inventors called their invention theReitwagen("riding car"). It was designed as an expedient testbed for their new engine, rather than a true prototype vehicle.

Butler's Patent Velocycle

The first commercial design for a self-propelled cycle was a three-wheel design called the Butler Petrol Cycle, conceived ofEdward ButlerinEnglandin 1884.He exhibited his plans for the vehicle at theStanley Cycle Showin London in 1884. The vehicle was built by theMerryweather Fire Enginecompany inGreenwich, in 1888.

The Butler Petrol Cycle was a three-wheeled vehicle, with the rear wheel directly driven by a5/8hp (466W) 600 cc (40 in3; 2¼×5-inch {57×127-mm}) flat twinfour strokeengine (withmagneto ignitionreplaced by coil and battery) equipped withrotary valvesand a float-fedcarburettor(five years beforeMaybach) andAckermann steering, all of which were state of the art at the time. Starting was by compressed air. The engine was liquid-cooled, with aradiatorover the rear driving wheel. Speed was controlled by means of athrottlevalve lever. No braking system was fitted; the vehicle was stopped by raising and lowering the rear driving wheel using a foot-operated lever; the weight of the machine was then borne by two small castor wheels. The driver was seated between the front wheels. It wasn't, however, a success, as Butler failed to find sufficient financial backing.

Many authorities have excludedsteam powered, electric motorcyclesor diesel-powered two-wheelers from the definition of a 'motorcycle', and credit the DaimlerReitwagenas the world's first motorcycle.Given the rapid rise in use of electric motorcycles worldwide, defining only internal-combustion powered two-wheelers as 'motorcycles' is increasingly problematic.

If a two-wheeled vehicle with steam propulsion is considered a motorcycle, then the first motorcycles built seem to be the FrenchMichaux-Perreaux steam velocipedewhich patent application was filled in December 1868,constructed around the same time as the AmericanRoper steam velocipede, built bySylvester H. RoperRoxbury, Massachusetts.Who demonstrated his machine at fairs and circuses in the Eastern U.S. in 1867,Roper built about 10 steam cars and cycles from the 1860's until his death in 1896.

about Fridge Magnets...

A refrigeratormagnet or fridgemagnet is anornament, often whimsical, attached to a smallmagnet, which is used to post items such as shopping lists, child artor reminders on arefrigeratordoor, or which simply serves as decoration.Refrigerator magnets come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and may have promotional messages placed on them. Refrigerator magnets are style="font-size: 13px; font-family: sans-serif; margin: 0.4em 0px 0.5em; line-height: 19px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The first fridge magnets were cylindrical or solid rectangular magnets. Later, a flexible magnet was developed, composed of a (usuallyferric oxide) mixed with a plastic binder. This is extruded as a sheet and passes on a conveyor belt over a line of powerful cylindricalpermanent magnets. These magnets are arranged in a stack with alternatingmagnetic polesfacing up (N, S, N, S,...) on a freely rotating shaft. This impresses the plastic sheet with the magnetic poles in an alternating line format. No electromagnetism is used to generate the magnets. The pole-pole distance is on the order of 5mm, but varies with manufacturer.Ferritemagnets are commonly used, too, with decorative elements attached to the magnets with adhesive.

Unlike most conventional magnets that have distinct north and south poles, flat refrigerator magnets are often magnetised during manufacture with alternating north and south poles on the refrigerator side. This can be felt by taking two similar (or identical) refrigerator magnets and sliding them against each other with the "magnetic" sides facing each other: the magnets will alternately repel and attract as they are moved a few millimetres. This construction gives twice the magnetism on one side and is thus more effective at keeping the large planar magnet uniformly attracted to the steel refrigerator than a uniformly-polarized magnet would be. This permits cheaper types and sizes of magnets to be used. The arrangement is called aHalbach array.

Plastic letters attached to small, thick rectangular magnets have been manufactured since the 1960's, and marketed as an educational product for young children. In the 1990s, sets of small sheet magnets printed with individual words became popular; these sets are used to create sentences including poetry. Magnets may be attached to souvenir objects, or to practical objects such as hooks, notepads, etc.Collecting magnets is a hobby, with some collectors specializing in magnets from their travels, or of a particular theme. They are sold at souvenir shops worldwide.

There is no generally recognized term (e.g.numismaticsfor currency collecting) for magnet collecting. A Russian collector has proposed the term memo-magnetics derived from the wordsmemoriale(Latin) andmagnetis(Greek) A collector of magnets would be called memo-magnetist. These terms have been used by at least one Russian online community for magnet collectors.

At one time, the largest verified collection of refrigerator magnets belonged to Louise J. Greenfarb fromHenderson, Nevada(suburb ofLas Vegas,USA). Her world record was included to theGuinness World Recordswith 19,300 items as of 1997. According to the British "Book of alternative records", it grew to 29,000 as of February 2002, and later up to over 30,000 items. Over 7,000 magnets from Greenfarb's collection were exhibited at theGuinness Museumin Las Vegas, which has since closed.

In January 1999, Tony Lloyd, a teacher in Cardiff, Wales, was interviewed by the Channel 4 Television programmeCollector's Lotwhen it was ascertained that he had largest collection of fridge magnets in Europe at that time, over 2000. As of September 2010, he had a collection of over 3,600.

Wikipedia says Poly resin is...

Poly resin is aresincompound generally used forstatues, figurines, and decorativefurniture. It is a sturdy material that can be intricately moulded, allowing a great level of detail with consistent texture.

Additives can be incorporated into the compound to enhance the material's strength, reduce its weight, add heat stability, decorative effects, and so on. Poly resin is also compatible with a large range of different finishes, including paint and metallic finishes, which is why many decorative pieces are made from this material.

One form of poly resin often used isAlabastrite. It is a stone-based material, easyto sculpt, takes paint well, and has a similar appearance to porcelain and pottery.
