Length of back: 14 • 1/16 inches, or 357 mm
many detailed photos below
This is a very good violin by John G Deveau, of Mamaroneck and New Rochelle, N.Y.
~~~ ° ~~~
He is listed in Wenberg's Violin Makers of the United States, and Henley's Universal Dictionary of Violin & Bow Makers:
It bears it's original label and is numbered 110. It is a professional level violin of high quality, very responsive, with a full tone that is rich and bright.
It has new Obligato strings and a bridge made by Sharon Que, alumnus of the shop of Joseph Curtin.
Condition: The original amber red oil varnish has migrated some while stored in its case the last century. There is one spot on the back where the varnish is rubbed off, and one repaired saddle crack on the treble side. It is otherwise in perfect, original condition.
The shaped Jaeger case, about 6 years old, that I have used for this violin is being sold separately, as well as a silver mounted antique bow.
This violin will be shipped in a really ratty old case, the last in the house, unless the buyer purchases the Jaegar case, then it will be shipped in that.
Here is a closeup of the treble side saddle area- it looks like there are two repaired cracks adjacent each other approx. 2 inches long that are hard to see. These were repaired and cleated by Sharon Que a few years ago. I think I mistakenly listed only one saddle crack in my description.
Question: Hello, Just wondering why the Deveau violin was returned. Does the saddle crack extend close to the sound post? Thanks for your help
Hi- thanks for writing- No the cracks are not the issue- the saddle cracks are very minor and permanently repaired- nowhere near the sound post -being 2 inches off the edge. The buyer wanted to have the varnish redone, and pay someone to do it. He didn't give me any information on what his estimated cost would be. I would advise buyers that if the cosmetic issues bother them not to offer, but if they want a good playing instrument this is it.
