A Rare Antique Brass Nautical Ship Surveyors Scope Theodolite Spears & Co Dublin For SaleA nice antique scope, engraved with the maker's name 'Spears & Company, Dublin'. I don't know much about the scope or it's intended use but I have seen a similar type, which was stated as having nautical origins, in other words, it was for use on a ship. The scope is very unusual, having two spirit levels, as you can see. The glass and liquid of the levels are intact. The scope itself can be looked through and the focus seems to work fine, also. The company of Spears was set up in Dublin, Ireland and was only in existence for around twenty years from the 1850's to the late 1860's, I believe. The scope measures 30cm in length and 16cm in height. This is a rare and unusual scope, made from solid brass, that has lots of collector appeal.

Happy offerding and good luck!On 26-Jun-13 at 20:30:37 BST, seller added the following information:
I have been informed since listing this item, by those in the know, that this scope is not of a nautical origin, as I thought and I apologise to anyone mislead by this assertion. The scope is, however, an early surveyor's scope, for use on ground. Someone suggested the scope should have cross hairs and these were likely to be made from a spider's silk but i can't see any evidence of these. Anyways, the scope is pretty old, being mid nineteenth century and the maker is a rare Irish company that was only in existence for a short time. hopefully anyone who is looking to offer on this is infomed enough to know what it is they are looking at, unlike myself!
