A Rare Blue And White Ming Export Porcelain Dish With A Hawk
Jingdezhen ware, late 16th century
thinly and sharply potted minyao porcelain of shallow circular form with an everted rim, the interior finely painted in deep rich underglaze cobalt blue with a central double circular medallion depicting an owl resting on a decorative perch with tussles on a tripod stand, the wide rim border encircled by flowering lotus sprays and crests, the reverse decorated with blue moons drawn upon birds perched on twigs and flowering branches, some very minor mushikui rim frits, kiln-grit adhering to the exterior and interior of the footring with some kiln flaws, covered with a pale blue tinged glaze, the glazed base with chatter marks vaguely visible, partly soiled, pinholes
The dish with a rare hawk design is thought to have been manufactured as one of sets of five or ten in Jingdezhen private kilns for export, as a set of ten has come up for sale in Japan. The current lot is the only dish available for sale this time.
13.3 cm (5.23 in) maximum cross diameter
Trivial glaze chips to the edge of the rim and some chips to the edge of the footring unless otherwise undamaged with no cracks, chips and restoration. Very good ring when tapped. Old wear to the glaze including an old scratch line to the base in general use.
