A Superb 17th / 18th century Gold Damascened Tulwar with en-suite scabbard fittings. The damascus blade with original polish and gold inlayed 'umbrella' armoury mark of the Royal Mughal Armouries in Delhi. Evidence of very old water damage in places - see photos.A little wear to the gold damascening on the hilt, some wear to the gold on the scabbard locket and chape.Scabbard: wood covered in green leather.Overall length of sword: 32 3/4" inchesOverall length of blade:27 1/4" inches (measured across the curve)Overall length of sword in scabbard: 35 1/2" inchesProvenance: purchased from the Late Robin Wigington ( who owned the world famous famous collection of items belonging to Tipu Sultan), in the late 1980's at his Stratford upon Avon shop and private museum. Robin Wigington was also author of : 'The Firearms of Tipu Sultann1783 - 1799'. His incredible collection was sold by Sotheby's in 2005 following his death. I was fortunate to live quite close to Robin's premises back then and paid regular visits and was given a personal tour of his Tipu collection.I sold most of my own collection a long time ago - one of the tulwars I owned is now exhibited in London's Victoria and Albert Museum.
