A VICTORIAN SCIENTIFIC MAGIC LANTERN

Description: Offered is an unusually small and compact scientific magic lantern. The lantern has a ivorine lable for ‘Archer & Sons, Liverpool’. The lantern is of unusual form as It can be used as a traditional lantern with a slide carrier when the front is closed up or as a scientific lantern when the front is propped up with the mirror backed wooden plate.

The lantern sits on a polished wooden base with a hinge at tone end so it can be inclined to the required angle. The body of the lantern is made of French polished mahogany with lacquered brass fittings. The inside of the body is made of blackened tin plate with a lamp holder on a sliding tray. The body has two doors, one to each side, with red coloured glass windows behind brass covers. At the front of the main housing is a large glass condenser in front of which is a fold up/down wooden frame. On the front of the frame are two screws and a latch that allows the user to lock in place a slide carrier. This panel can be folded up at 90degrees and a mirror backed piece of mahogany put in place to reflect the light. The lens has a 90degree glass prism to reflect the image onto a wall. The lantern comes with 2 interchangeable lenses, a 6inch and an 8inch.

Please note: for shipping the long focussing rod at the front unscrews.

Condition: Cosmetically the lantern has seen plenty of use with the heat of the lamp having dulled the French polish on the doors and at the back. The tin plate has some minor surface rust. The rest of the lantern and the lens assembly at the front is all in good condition as is the mahogany slide carrier. Optically the lenses are all good clear and un damaged. Mechanically the moving parts all work well with no wear or damage.
