A Very Interesting Antique, Early 19th Century Silver Awadh Rupees Necklace :
This is a very interesting woven necklace that has been adorned with 15 silver rupees and a hand hammered silver pendant that dates from the early to later years of the 19th Century. The silver coins certainly date from the start of the 19th Century, but the necklace was probably made towards the 3rd quarter of the 19th centuryI am not a coin expert, but I do know that the rupees are from the Princely State, Awadh and the Lucknow Mint, and date from approximately 1800. All the coins are slightly different with regards to the strike and wear, and I have been assured by an expert on coins from the princely States that there is no question that these are original coins and not later strikes. One thing that is unusual is that there are 15 coins, seven to one side of the pendant and eight to the other. It is unlikely that this was an error as you can see how the coins have been spaced, and so most probably has some significance. The necklace measures approximately 65 cm in length; the central pendant is approximately 4 cm x 4.5 cm; each coin has an approximate diameter of 22 mm.For coin collectors, I have no idea how difficult it would be to remove the soldered coins, and then remove the solder.
