A Wonderful and Rare 19th Century New England Inlaid "Love Token Box"
This isawonderful and rare 19th century New England inlaid "Love Token Box". This would have been a box made for an young man's soon to be bride. It is made somewhat in the form of a jewerly box but with finer detail. It appears to be constructed from a variety of woods, possibly a combination of mahogany, ash, and white pine. This box retains all of its original hardware including the hinges, lock and latch. The front has two delightful inlaid stars, with one larger inlaid double meshed heart in the center. Above the heart are burned into the wood the letters "M.C.D.", presumably this is the initials of the gentleman suitor. This box would have beenmade for the future bride to keep her most cherishedthings. The inside lid has an oval wood frame with a gentlemans miniature portait held within. I do not believe this is a period portait, but one most likely added at a later time. Most likely the original miniature portait became separated from this box. The condition is quite nice with no significant repairs or damage, and the surface is original with a fine oxidized patina. The bottom of the box is a little loose, butis is completely intact. The box measures 10 1/2" wide x 5" high x 7" deep.A most charming early box, with lots of character. You willabsolutely love this gem!
