A Pair Of Antique Cased Meerschaum Pipes With Carved Dogs On The Body:
Here we have a cracking cased pair of antique meerschaum pipes probably dating from the early to mid part of the 19th. century. From their size we think they are most likely to be ladies pipes. The carved dogs, (maybe pugs?), are in good order, both are missing their mouth pieces. We're unsure if the bowls have been fitted separately or have, possibly, been off at some point. It's not obvious but there is some signs of very old adhesive around the base of one bowl. (Was this how they were made?).
Looking at the interior of the case the indentations from the flared bowl of the one pipe are visible. This one is slightly larger and won't fit into the other recess. The smooth lipped bowl does not leave any markings in the second recess. This, we believe, indicates that the pipes were originally supplied in the case itself.
The maroon leather case is in really good condition and the clasp snaps shut crisply. The interior is lined with velvet to the bottom and silk to the top. This top has a legend that reads: "Echt Meerschaum, Garantirt, Echt Bernstein", a guaranteed meerschaum pipe by the maker Bernstein?
