AESOP'S FABLES 1651 OGILBY MOST COPIES LOST IN LONDON FIRE 1666
AESOP. The Fables... Paraphras'd in Verse, and adorn'd with Sculpture by John Ogilby. London: Thomas Warren for Andrew Crook, 1651.
FIRST EDITION of Ogilby's translation with outstanding illustrations of these 81 fables (numbered 1-13, 14/15 and 16-81). "To call these versions paraphrases is misleading... they are original treatments of familiar themes. Ogilby gives free play to his imagination as he retells the fables with so many amplifications of homely detail and classical allusions that what would ordinarily have been eighty-one pages or a little more becomes two hundred and thirty-six." (E. Hodnett Francis Barlow First Master of English Book Illustration p. 79). Wing A-689.
Most copies of this edition were lost in the London Fire of 1666. Complete this copy gets a $6,000-$8,000 estimate in a heartbeat at any sale house. Get this unbelievably rare copy for a steal given the condition and that it isalmost a complete work lacking just a few leaves which are listed below.
PLEASE READ AS THIS TOME IS WORTH A LOT OF MONEY!
Work is in fair condition with the binding being what appears to be period but is no doubt from a piece of scrap from the bindery of the time. Some randoming stamping on the binding. Book rebacked as the spine and corners are most definately not original. Pages are in fair condition as well with 5 leaves have a complete tear from one side to the other but closed tear. One leave with the top 1/4 lacking affecting the text. Some small chew marks on the top of 15 leaves. Dampstaining cover approximately a third of 70 leaves. Many pagesdog eared at some point. Some crude yellow coloring to38 plates. Dome sized holes on 6 leaves not affecting text. Lacking portrait. Lacking one plate.pagination as follows: (18) 1-64 (4), 3-55, (2), 1-55, (2), 3-59 (2). This pagination does not match any other copy out there in Worldcat or COPAC. At a minimum the copy is missing 1 plate and5 leaves in my professional opinion. Per Worldcat their copies read (16), 67, 4-55 (1), 55, (1), 64. Note an impritur leaf to add another leaf to the mix in the preface which is not called for and the last (2) is a plate which must be bound improperly. Also this copy starts at pg 3 in the second part whereas the Worldcat copy starts at pg 4. Truely an interesting work with some anomalies.
