Algonquin Holy Bible Chippewa/ojibwa/native American Indian Linguistics 1844

EXTREMELY RARE, ORIGINAL 1844 EDITION OF "IU OTOSHKI-KIKINDIUIN AU KITOGIMAMINAN GAIE BEMAJIINUNG JESUS KHRIST: IMA OJIBUE INUEUINING GIIZHITONG. THE NEW TESTAMENT OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST: TRANSLATED INTO THE LANGUAGE OF THE OJIBWA INDIANS." This important 19th century work is attributed to Henry Blatchford and was printed by the American Bible Society, New York. The present treatise is among the earliest translations of the Bible into the Ojibwa [aka Chippewa] language, preceded by only one other, that of Edwin James (1833). The present translation however, is arguably the rarest such work. While still scarce, James' translation is comparatively abundant in institutional circles. We could not find another copy of the present treatise in private hands, and WordCat locates no other copies in book format (held only in microform) [OCLC No. 77136222]. Sabin 57090."Translated by a native Ojibwa, Rev. Henry Blatchford, and is one of the best specimens of the language extant." [See: "Proof-Sheets of a Bibliography of the Languages of the North American Indians" by James Constantine Pilling (1885), p. 78].Chippewa [aka Southwestern Ojibwa, Ojibwe, Ojibway, or Ojibwemowin] is an Algonquian [aka Algonquin] language spoken from upper Michigan westward to North Dakota, and represents the southern component of the Ojibwe language. Chippewa is part of the Algonquian language family and an indigenous language of North America. Chippewa is part of the dialect continuum of Ojibwe [including Chippewa, Ottawa, Algonquin, and Oji-Cree], which is closely related to Potawatomi. It is spoken on the southern shores of Lake Superior and in the areas toward the south and west of Lake Superior in Michigan and Southern Ontario. The speakers of this language generally call it Anishinaabemowin [the Anishinaabe language] or more specifically, Ojibwemowin [the Ojibwa language]. There is a large amount of variation in the language with some of the variations caused by ethnic or geographic heritage, while still others occurring from person to person. There is no single standardization of the language as it exists as a dialect continuum. Some varieties differ greatly and can be so diverse that speakers of two different varieties cannot understand each other. In the southern range of are where the language is spoken, it is mostly spoken by the older generations of the Anishinaabe people, and many of its speakers also speak English. The Chippewa dialects have been the focus of many academic works, from William Whipple Warren and Fr. Frederick Baraga in the 19th century, Frances Densmore, Jan P. B. de Josselin de Jong, Charles Fiero, Earl Nyholm and John Nichols in the 20th century. The Chippewa dialect of Ojibwemowin however, has continued to steadily decline. Beginning in the 1970s many of the communities have aggressively put their efforts into language revitalization, but have only managed to produce some fairly educated second-language speakers. Today, the majority of the first-language speakers of this dialect of the Ojibwe language are elderly, whose numbers are quickly diminishing, while the number of second-language speakers among the younger generation are growing. None of the second-language speakers however, have yet to transition to the fluency of a first-language speaker.Condition: Rare book remains in fair condition only[see images].
