ALPHONSE MUCHA
(1860-1939)AN ORIGINAL GRAPHITE (PENCIL) DRAWING
(An Untitled Portrait Of A Young Woman)Circa: MUCHA) (This artwork came without any official COAs or gallery documents attached, hence it is offered in our Sale \"as is\")Czechoslovakian-born ALPHONSE MUCHA is, perhaps, the most famous ART NOUVEAU illustrator and painter next to HENRI TOULOUSE-LAUTREC. Mucha is noted for his magnificent posters of idealized female figures. After early education in BRNO, Moravia, and work for a theater scene-painting firm in VIENNA, Mucha studied art in PRAGUE, MUNICH and PARIS in the 1880s. He first became prominent as the principal advertiser of the well-known actress SARAH BERNHARDT in Paris. He designed the posters for several theatrical productions featuring that actress, beginning with \"Gismonda\" (1894), and he also designed sets and costumes for her as well. Mucha designed many other posters and magazine illustrations, becoming one of the foremost designers in the ART NOUVEAU style. His supple, fluent draftsmanship is used to great effect in his posters of FEMALE NUDES, whose delicate features are framed by luxuriantly flowing strands of hair. The sensuous bravura of the draftsmanship, particularly the use of twining, whiplash lines, imparts a strange refinement to these nudes.Between 1903 and 1922 Mucha made four trips to the United States, where he attracted the patronage of Charles Richard Crane, a CHICAGO industrialist and Slavophile, who subsidized Mucha\'s series of 20 large historical paintings (1912-30) illustrating the \"Epic of the Slavic People.\" After 1922 Mucha lived in his native Czechoslovakia, donating his \"Slavic Epic\" paintings to the city of PRAGUE.In MUCHA\'s later years, with the rising tide of FASCISM sweeping Europe, his oeuvre fell into disrepute and Mucha died in 1939, largely a forgotten man. Starting in the 1970s though, a great resurgence of interest in Mucha\'s beautiful and timeless art brought him posthumously back to the top-tier of artists from the Art Nouveau period, the era he truly exemplifies.

THE PENCIL DRAWING

We are pleased to offer this truly-exquisite, early-1900s, untitled, ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWING PORTRAIT of a YOUNG WOMAN\'s head and shoulders. It is drawn by-hand in GRAPHITE (LEAD PENCIL) on a light-tan paper (possibly tan from age), blank on the verso. This lovely FEMALE PORTRAIT features Mucha\'s trademark luxuriant and entwined wavy hair.NOTE: the first few photos were shot in the frame, through the glass, and consequently may be a bit murky and not read so clearly on your screen; the rest were shot out of frame and are much clearer and more accurate.
