Amazing 19c Chinese Sandalwood Card Case 3/4" Thick Carved In 5 Levels Of Depth For Sale
I am proud to offer this week for sale an amazing 19c Chinese deeply carved sandalwood calling card case in a very special design and of high quality workmanship, details and a thickness of over 3/4"! This fine card case was produced in Canton, China during the 'Old China Trade' era around c1860 or so and was no doubt destined for export to the West. I have owned 100s of Chinese card cases over the past 24 years in a combination of many different materials, sizes, quality and condition, but when it comes to the cases made from sandalwood this one is right up there in the top 2 or 3 cases. One of the best features of this case is that the total thickness is just a bit over 3/4" and the side with the traditional carving scenes is average in depth so the opposite side is extremely thick showing deep carving techniques containing back carving and undercutting attaining no less than five distinct levels giving the overall scene a 3D appearance. The subject matter of the deeper carved side depicts larger figures at the bottom showing them in a serious debate or conversation with a horse to the side and his leg actually carved away from the surface while the top area has a figure sitting with a large sun hat peering at a horned deer all amoungst rockery, plants and trees done with realistic knots as well as railings, fences andmasonryand stone walls. There are also a variety of buildings and other with a similar treatment to the reverse but in a much smaller delicate scale allowing for much more subject matter still finished in fine details. The side edges are executed in leaves and flowers in a continuous boarder with the case having a pleasing shaped appearance verses the normal rectangular type. Condition is excellent with a wonderful deep caramel color with a thick surface patina from many years of handling resembling the look of being varnished because of the patinized surface but Iguaranteethe look is 100% natural from 150 years of handling and the only flaws I can see are a few tiny chipson the deeply carved side but it is very difficult to tell, otherwise just normal light age wear.
