Amazing Vintage 1920's Deco Glass/crystal/jet Beading Flapper Dress Gown:
Spectacular Antique 1920's Beaded Flapper Dress
Exceptionally Stunning Art Deco Design
The dress… Shows brilliance & expertise in the fine art of draping, style & design ~ Truly an Amazing Dress with a Spectacular Art Deco Bead design throughout ~ It is made up from a fine open weave black net fabric, adorned with literally hundredsand hundreds of tiny sparkling crystal / glass / jet beads ~ rows of long tube shaped beads ~ as well as BIG round faceted cut glass (crystal?) beads.
The best way I can describe the motif or pattern is an abstract “sunburst” of sorts and shooting stars! Both front and back of dress are covered in beads….the main subject or “centerpiece” pattern is a gorgeous cluster pattern of what looks like a rose/flower surrounded by a concentrated jagged pointed star/sun pattern>> bursting into tiny straight rows of beading “twinkling” down & out and all around! Centered inside the “rose” is a detailed circle of small round faceted cut beads in a gun metal grey color.
The lower skirting of the dress is has two layers of the sheer fine black net fabric and shows a pattern of “shooting stars” which includes stylized rows of the big round faceted beads in groups of four and progress in size from small to large (largest measuring ¾” in diameter& the smallest 3/8”)
A design masterpiece indeed as this fantastic dress comes together by AMAZING side panel “WINGS”! The back dress and side panel wings are all made up from one piece of netted fabric. Cut with a rounded hem that perfectly drapes loosely below waist & low around sides and then tiers up when sewn into the front dress panel creating a fluttering winged effect!! AAAAAAAMAZING!!
Slip-on or pull over entry this dress has no closures or hardware. It is loose fitting, with free armhole open sides. The front of dress has a wide/open “portrait” cut neckline, and a plunging wide “V” in back. It is sheer and unlined and would have been worn over a silk slip dress underneath. The dress measures 46 inches long, down centerfront and 49 inches long from shoulder tip down to bottom hem.Other measurements arepretty much"free" due to the open sides but when garment lay flat the ACROSS waist on front/back panels measures15 inches(30"waist when doubled) and open side panels expand 5-6inches on each side....meaning this could fit many sizes and shapes! :)
~ Condition of Dress ~ Consideringthe age of this spectacular dress, it is inFANTASTIC Vintage Antique Condition! THIS DRESS IS NEARLY100 YEARS OLD so naturallyithas comes with some minor wear issues. The majority of the beads are fully intact, but there are areas of missing beads here and there. On front bodice the "rose" design on chest area there is one long thread with beads hanging unattached...it could be removed completely or brought to a professional who can reweave it. At very close inspection I noticed some of the larger beads had chipped glass pieces. Also, there were loose beads that did come off when handling, taking in & out of storage as well as taking on & off mannequin; I did save them in a small zip lock and of course will ship w/ dress. ~ This dress is impressively heavy in weight and throughout the years has caused some damage at top shoulders seams. They are attached but inner shoulder seams are splitting causing beads to loosen and come off....definitely needs to be reinforced with an underlay of anappropriate net, mesh, silk or satin fabric. The top of shoulders were pinned to mannequin for pictures to prevent any further damage. Overall the black netting seems to be intact on body of dress with just afew minor teeny tinyalmost holes usually where the beading is tied off. The most damage is located near the bottom hem of dress. The top layer of black netting has torn in several places where the large round beads were attached (mostly on the back bottom hem area). There are some large beads hanging by a thread and some that just fell off. There are a few big beads in the ziplock but there were a few missing when I bought the dress several years ago. I took several pictures in several different settings ~ inside, outside, with flash and without~ for your inspection.
With some TLC this dress can absolutely be restored to a wearable condition….probably not a good idea todance theCharleston in but would be head turner at any cocktail event! Otherwise I listed some realistic & creative alternative options as follows :1. The fabric at shoulders have tears on front only, which is pretty common in these dress,it can bereinforced with an underlay of silk or satin fabric.
2. The dress can be used in parts…. making a beautiful skirt or top and using the extra fabric to fix minor holes or tears or make a whole new panel. This method would also allow you to replenish any missing bead work with the original beads.
3. Cut out usable beaded panels and appliqué onto another garment. The antique beads could be reused to make jewelry.
4. This historical dress would make a perfect template or reference for Deco beadwork and patternmaking.
