American Revolutionary War Period Silver-hilted Officer's Sword :
This wonderful English cuttoe dates ca.1770, and has a beautifully hand-chased silver and ebony hilt, both quillons are in the form of hunting dog torsos. The silver pommel has a nicely stippled background, with raised floral decorations and a proud button. There is a rain keeper on the bottom of the hilt, also of sterling silver. The grip is ebony, stylized with with a series of vertical grooves. Fighting quality blade is fighting quality Montmorency, 64 cm long and 2.5 cm wide at the ricasso. Blade has acquired a dark uniform patina. Blade is slender and quite strong. Hangers like this one were carried with the British and Continental officers in the period spanning the French and Indian War through the American Revolutionary War.
