Ames Civil War M1840 Nco Non-commissioned Officers Sword 1862 W/ Field Repair?:
Civil War AMES M1840 NCO Non-Commissioned Officers Sword 1862 field repair?
Sword overall is over 38.75” long
Blade is about 32.25”
This can be one of the most unique items in your collection.
This appears to be a hasty “battlefield or war time” repair. The tang of the blade appears to have broke in the handle, the blade was then re-inserted into the handle and secured with a couple of copper rivets or pins put right through the assembly to hold it together. Some lead was then applied as an extra measure to hold the rivets in place. However, it appears that in their haste the blade was installed upside down!
This could be used for parts, restored, or better yet as a great unique piece that most other collectors won’t have. This sword could definitely prompt some great conversations.
The blade is in ok condition, especially considering its age, with a dark grey patina, but NOT rusty.
It has the Ames maker’s mark from Chicopee Mass on one side although very light. On the other side is US and 1862 with inspector’s mark of AHC Which is the inspector’s initials for either Archibald H. Ceiley or A. H. Clark who inspected NCO swords for Ames in 1862 and 1863.
Blade is pretty straight with a large nick (from a sword strike?) and about a 9” section where the edge is real rough, all of which seem to be period wear since it has the same dark patina. (please see pictures)
The hilt is all bronze with good patina as well.
This was definitely a used sword with a unique history, and probably great stories to tell.
