An Antique Holy Water Font From Russia:
I acquired this little gem many years ago in St. Petersburg Russia from a small and well tucked away antique shop on one of the side streets. Capitalism was only beginning to be allowed and the government at the time didn’t “come down” on small out of the way places. I am sure the owner paid a small bribe to the officials to let him stay open. It dates from around 1900 and is composed of red velvet, wood, and metal (possibly pewter). It would have hung in a Russian Orthodox Christian’s private apartment and out of the eyesight of the public eye. Russians were required to be atheists and dared not show signs of faith in public. It measures 8 1/2” in height by 5 1/2” in width. A rare reminder of how the world can change. The wear on the back shows that it was used and cherished. It is the only one I found available.
