This is a antique (c. 1890) Japanese red oak wood silk winder. There is a central hole (see pictures 7 & 8) which can be fitted onto a shaft for easy revolving, unwinding or winding. There is a mark of the craftsman branded on the wood(see picture 4).
This winderisguaranteedto be over 100 years old, although probably much more, judging from the antique sale in Japan where it was acquired near Kyoto Japan. They are interesting as stand aloneas art and can be used as stands for lots of things such as plants or bowls as it has a flat stable top in either position. Super cool, rustic, yet refined in a craftsman like way. It is made in a eight part construction which is all fitted together in overlappingjoints as well as mortiseand tenonjoints
The antique spool measures 8 1/2\" high by 8 \" wide (22 x 20cm), and, along with a century old glowing patina, this winderremains in fine condition.
