This is a Cary/Gould type brass compound microscope in it's original wooden case circa 1840.

The body tube (with a cyclindrical-shaped upper half and conical-shaped lower half) screws into an arm attached to the top of the pillar. There are four objective lenses with different magnifications that can be used separately or screwed together to increase the magnification and focus can be achieved by a rack and pin that moves the stage up and down on the pillar. The concave mirror is mounted on the pillar with a pin.
Also included are the following accessories...

All items fit neatly into the wooden case which has a key operated lock, although the key is missing.
