Antique 1884 Handwritten Diary Teenage Farm Boy Deering Nh Buttrick Genealogy For Sale
This sale is for an antique 1884 handwritten diary of a very hard-working 13-year old teenage boy named " Mark W. Buttrick " from Deering, New Hampshire, Hillsborough County....He speaks of drawing wood, watering the horses, " turns out the cows ", used a shotgun for the first time on May 17, 1884 and shot at chipmunks, used traps ( for woodchucks and sold their tails), fired up his ' cannon", taps trees for maple syrup, boils the sap, splits wood, made a padlock iron, bought a drum & plays it, likes to read, has a horse named " Pink,"...shovels manure, made a picture frame, pumps water, "drilled out a pistol barrel ", "went a hunting " and caught woodchucks & hawks, goes upto " bridge", helped build a fence, rode on a raft, built a place to boil sap, "went over to Antrim and got my hair cut ", shingled barn, went fishing, went to parties (candy), went skating & sledding, plays cards, went to dances, " planted seven hills of cucumbers ", " rolled down oats ", harrowed, " built a new furnas ", etc.....Speaks of persons, such as "Scott Ellinwood "...." Mrs. Brown "....." Granvel Duncan "...." Henry Holton "..." Uncle Walker ".....He wrote in this diary daily from January 1, 1884through July 4, 1884....then blank from July 5th through December 31, 1884...Then in back, there are notes of when he worked for others, what he was paid, and addresses...He usually got paid .75 cents for his work...This 13-year old boyworked very hard everyday and seemed to be content with his life...Diary measures 2 7/8" x 4 7/8" and has a leather cover, which is missing on back and has wear/tear along binding. All else is good. Pages are intact and in nice condition.
