Antique 18th Century Very Rare Georgian Solid Silver vase shaped Argyll, with internal cylinder into which a hot iron or hot water was placed to keep the gravy hot. Argylls supposedly conceived in the mid-18th Century by one of the Dukes of Argyll who disliked cold gravy. The wooden handle is insulated to prevent the hands from burning and the spout rests at the bottom of the bowl, ensuring that the liquid goodness of the gravy pours out ahead of the fatty layer on top. Argylls are very rare and very collectable. This piece is hand engraved on the body with a family crest, both the bowl and the internal cylinder have their original lids with finials. Hallmarked English Silver, London, year 1790 (p), Maker's mark TH (Unidentified by Grimwade, possibly Thomas Heming).
