Antique 19th Century Timuri Baluch Belouch Balouch Baluchi Tent Rug Rare For Sale
Up for sale is a rare Timuri Baluch measuring 39 1/2 inches by 56 1/2inches. In more than 20 years of collecting and study I have seen only four in this design, two bags, one prayer rug and this single example of a tent rug. It is quite rare. It has 9 vertical knots per inch and 8 horizontal knots per inch or 72 asymetrical knots per square inch. Pile is low and even with minor exception (see photo 7 where some of the foundation is exposed.) Of course, because of its age (about 120 to 130 years or more) the colors mordanted with ferrous oxides have corroded to the warps and wefts but this is not damage but a normal result of the ageing process. All colors are natural dyes. Both ends have been stopped.(photo 10) Most of the goat hair selvedge is in place with small repairs in wool. About two inches need to be rewrapped. (photo 11) There are two or three small areas on the back that look to have the remains of some kind of adhesive.(photos 8 and 9) However, the rug has a completely floppy handle with no stiffness in these areas or any others and the rug was hand washed prior to listing. I could start this rug for what I think the rug isworth or at a price where you will decide its value. I am offering the rug for $.99 without reserve. Shipping in the lower 48 states is $18.00.
