Antique 19thc Georgian French Floral Carved Mahogany Cribbage Board, 22" Long For Sale
A finely
carved antique early 19th Century French mahogany cribbage board of large
proportions. The top of the board is carved along its length with stylised
floral motifs, in the French style. One large peg remains with the board. This wonderful
piece of gaming history dates to c1800-1820.
According to the writings of John Aubrey (1626-1697), cribbage was created by
the English poet Sir John Suckling in the early 17th century, as a derivation
of the game "noddy". While noddy has disappeared, crib has survived,
virtually unchanged, as one of the most popular card games in the world.
